The cell wall of baker’s yeast is the source of beta 1,3/1,6 glucan. In order to be effective, the beta glucan molecule must be extensively purified and processed – to remove the mannan, fat and protein contaminants. If this is not accomplished, the beta 1,3/1,6 glucan is covered or masked and can not bind to the glucan receptor sites on the macrophage cells in the intestinal tract. Any impurities in beta 1,3/1,6 glucan significantly decrease its ability to activate macrophage cells.
