Human Growth Hormone (HGH or hGH) also known as somatotrophin is the most abundant hormone produced by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland (hypophysis). It is made up of 191 units of amino acids and weighs about 25,302 daltons. It circulates in the blood for a few minutes and is then converted by the liver to IGF-1 (Insulin-like Growth Factor 1) also known as Somatomedin-C.

IGF-1 is made up of only 70 units of amino acids and weighs about 7649 daltons. IGF-1 stays in our bloodstream for a longer period and is directly responsible for most of the actions of HGH. It promotes the burning of fats and protein synthesis meaning that it repairs & builds muscles, collagen, elastin, bones, skin, organs and cells. As like most hormones, the natural secretion of HGH by our pituitary gland declines with age. HGH secretion in human reaches its peak during adolescence, around the age of 12.
